How NOT to Piss-Off Your Friends on Facebook!
Nov 12th
There’s a predictable science to pissing off your friends and other users on Facebook. Unfortunately, many have mastered this art with jedi-like precision. This post shares 9 practical tips about how NOT to annoy your friends on the social networking giant.
1. Use @Name and Photo Tagging Wisely
A couple things worth mentioning here. Doing this is sometimes ok if it’s real and genuine. It’s fine to mention a friend’s name in a thank you, if you’re quoting something they said, or re-posting information, etc. It’s not ok to tag them and put a link to check-out your website / fan page if you’ve just been accepted you as a friend.
If you’re going to tag another person in a photo, don’t do it if they look like they just got out of bed! Be respectful and think whether you’d want someone to tag you when you’re not at your best. Remember, every @name or photo tag will post on their wall or in their pictures for all their friends to see. You don’t want to unintentionally embarrass your peeps.
2. Don’t Add friends to Groups Without their Permission First
I’ve spoken about this before. It’s one of Facebook’s worst ideas thus far. It really doesn’t matter what cause your promoting or spreading awareness about, if you add someone to a group without permission you risk getting deleted / blocked by the user. This is just rude.
The right way is to send a message to the friend you’re looking to invite and politely ask them if they’d join your cause. Maybe give them some background about it and why you feel it’s important.
3. Don’t Spam and Post Links on Personal / Fan Page Walls
This is one of the most common things you’ll notice on Facebook. Other companies, brands, and marketers posting promo links on other users and fan pages walls. This is done in an attempt to siphon-off targeted traffic but usually backfires, getting you blocked by the user or group.
4. Don’t “Like” Every Post / Status Update
I would guess that every regular Facebook user has that one person that clicks LIKE on every status update you post, every photo, etc… Here’s the deal, though.
It’s a genuinely cool feeling that people listen to what you have to say and give feedback. However, if you click “like” on every single post, that tells users there’s a good chance you’re not reading every post or listening to what they’ve said!
Personally, I don’t like every post enough to click the Facebook link even with some of coolest people I respect, follow, and consistently turn to for advice. It’s unnatural. That’s just how it is and most people are similar.
5. Don’t Place Links in Friend Request Messages
If you send a friend request to someone with a promo link in your message, your acceptance rate dramatically plummets. You look self-serving and not really interested about who you’re connecting with. Don’t do it.
6. Don’t Reply to Mass Broadcast Messages
We’ve all seen these. Sometimes it’s inevitable but spammers get onto your friends list. Then, they send a mass message or general broadcast to a few hundred folks, then those people reply to all. ARGHHH, Charlie Brown!!
Sometimes this mindless chatter goes back and forth and practically fills-up your Facebook inbox. In my book, these individuals just won a ticket on a high speed train to the town of Deletion!
7. Don’t Invite your Friends to Play Games / Apps Every Other Day
Come-on, now! Be respectful of your friends and understand the apps that you’re playing before allowing them access. Some have settings you can turn-off to be respectful to your friends and others do not.
I don’t want to play Farmville or Mafia Wars so stop inviting me and blowing-up my news feed!
8. Don’t have a Cluttered Wall Full of Junk
I see quite a few brands and prominent public figures that allow any old thing to be posted on their wall. This is suicide because it detracts from the message of the company. It’s real annoying to visit your favorite public figure’s page, then have to sift through a bunch of crap on the wall to find what they had to say.
Moderate and filter what you allow on the wall. Do it often, too! If you don’t have the time, then hire someone to manage it for you.
9. Comment on your Status Updates as Facebook Users Respond
I don’t care how famous you are, or if you’re a company as large as Apple. The worst thing you can do is post something, then get 1,000 comments and likes, then never comment on that same post where so much interaction has occurred.
If brands and celebs consistently did this one thing alone (actually engage full-on), they’d build so much more good will with their audience and dramatically boost their revenue.
No one likes to comment where there isn’t any feedback by the fan page owner. People also don’t like to feel like there’s no one listening on the other end. This is pretty common sense.
Listen, one of the keys to profitably kicking-ass with social media is to treat your personal friends, business page fans, and follows like you treat people offline. There are certain rules to good communication and rapport building but for some reason many ignore them when it comes to meeting other Facebook users.
Always be courteous and considerate toward your audience.

Facebook has become an important tool for doctors, professionals and other entrepreneurs to grow and market themselves. Many small businesses have now started using Facebook Fans Pages to communicate activities taking place in their business like an event, promotion, seminars, appreciation day, and other things of interest.
Although most businesses recognize that using a Facebook Fan Page can be an effective medium to reach-out to potential customers and clients, many times they don’t see the number of fans increasing as they would like. This can cause a sense of frustration. So, I thought I’d give you 7 simple and effective ways of getting more fans:
1. Email signatures: This one is the simplest method which takes only 5 minutes or so to set up, but costs nothing and is quite effective. Include details about your Facebook fan page in your email signature, and every time you send an email out your signature will remind people of your Facebook fan page.
2. Invitations to your mailing list: As a small business owner, you must already have a mailing list. Why not send an email to your list asking them to become your Facebook fan? This type of targeted mailing will help you get loads of Facebook fans from resources that you already have and can tap into easily.
3. Invite users to become Facebook fans in other emails: I applied for a Delta Sky Miles credit card recently, and was quite surprised to see that their confirmation email had a link to become their Facebook fan. At first, I was confused, but then I was impressed by their dedication to social media.
Most businesses send confirmation emails about orders, and other such emails which only serve to inform their customer that the order has been shipped or that they have been approved for a credit card or something like that. Why not take this opportunity to ask them to join your Facebook fan page?
4. Ask your Twitter followers: This one is a no-brainer as well . You already have a lot of Twitter followers who are interested in what you have to say. Isn’t it natural that you ask them to become your Facebook fan too? Tweet out about your fan page and you will see good results over time.
5. Connect your website to your Facebook fan page: It is not realistic to believe that people will look-up your brand on Facebook on their own. You need to trigger that and a good way of doing that is by connecting your website to your Facebook fan page. Put a link on the sidebar or your blog to your Facebook fan page and you will see your number of fans trickle up every day.
6. Run contests: If you were planning to run contests or a give-away, why not add a condition of becoming your fan on Facebook and boost your social media marketing while you hand out freebies? Such events are a useful platform to give a one-time boost to fan numbers.
7. Join the fun: You could do all the above and still not get enough fans if you are not active on Facebook. You need to join the conversation, tag photos, post updates, and even post exclusive content. If people don’t feel that the community is engaging and alive they will give up on it.
Hopefully you will take immediate action on these tips and give your Facebook fan page a boost in the amount of friends that are engaged in your business activities.

3 Facebook Marketing Tips for Local Businesses

Since Facebook has over 500 million active users, it’s important that small businesses like attorneys, chiropractors, realtors, dentists and cosmetic surgeons participate regularly on the network. Facebook can also be a massive lead generation magnet if used correctly.
The common problem I see with business owners, is that they have no idea how to get the traffic from Facebook to their blog or website. Let’s face it, social networking is great to build relationships but if you cannot bring the people to your site and capture targeted leads, it doesn’t matter.
Don’t let Facebook be a royal time-suck! If you’re not careful, you’ll spend hours on there without being productive. In fact, the stats say the average Facebook user spends close to an hour per day on the network. Considering the average internet surfer spends no more than 3 seconds on any given website, this is HUGE.
Here’s how to capture targeted traffic from Facebook:
1) Use Facebook Ads to target your specific local demographic and send them to a landing page with an offer. You can either send them to a Facebook Fan page or to your website. Have a free report, offer, or contest on that page and get them to place their name / email into an opt-in form.
You’ll need to hire a service to create a custom Facebook page so it looks professional. You’ll also need an email follow-up system if you don’t have one. I use Aweber because they have over a 99% deliverability rate and phone support.
2) Friend request / meet 15 local friends per day on Facebook and send them a polite message with the invite. Engage in open ended conversation when they accept your request and ask them about what they do. After on your friends list for a few weeks, create and send an invitation with a special offer about your business.
3) Use the Facebook like button on your blog or website. The great thing about this is when someone clicks the icon, it immediately tells their Facebook friends list that they liked you / your business. Many of their friends will click the link because they trust the recommendations of their friends.
Using these effective methods described above will allow you to increase your website traffic and new business through your doors by using Facebook. There has never been an easier way to get more exposure via the web.

Is Facebook Ads the Next Google AdWords?
Oct 19th
The million-dollar question is stated in the title of this article: “Is Facebook Ads the next Google AdWords?” The question is about the future and because of that and facts being facts, it safe to say that Facebook Ads is not at this time equivalent to Google AdWords.
But, we may also conjecture that it could eventually have a major impact on selling in the same way that AdWords has.
Facebook Ads and Google AdWords
The two are similar in a few ways. Both offer pay per click and pay per impression rates. Both also allow you to target the geographic location where you want your ads to appear. Ads can appear within your city, region, state, country or around the world. But there are some major differences between the two, and they are important to consider.
The Differences
The major difference is that with Google, people are looking for either specific information or a product. They usually have an objective in terms of their search, and so if they put the word “guitar” into Google, there is a chance that they may be considering purchasing one. Thus, ads that come up for music stores or guitar manufactures have a decent chance of getting that person’s attention and perhaps even a “click” from their cursor.
But Facebook, which unlike Google you must join to use, is a membership site and not a open search engine. When you use Facebook Ads, you can decide on which subsets of users will see your advertisement, targeting them. But those who see your ad may not be interested in buying anything. In fact, they may be the type of user who doesn’t pay any attention to the ads at all.
Uses of Each
Thus, the Google AdWords and Facebook Ads work very differently. Google works better for those who are selling specific services or products, as the point of the search engine is to connect people with some sort of specific information that they have requested.
Facebook Ads are more like the ads you see on buses, billboards, newspapers and in magazines. They are part of the terrain and almost act more like reminders to people that the products are there if they want them. Also, because Facebook tends to be visited by people when they have leisure time, it’s thought that advertisements geared towards fun products or designed to help establish and imprint a brand work best.
What Should You Do?
If you’re looking to reach as many people as you can in as many ways, then you should use both Facebook Ads and Google AdWords. In a way, this is a time of great experimentation and development with both. Facebook Ads may become something very different if the site itself changes its focus or in some way expands its features. The same thing is true regarding Google AdWords. At this point, both can enhance your web presence in different ways.
